School Custodian (Second Shift)

Summary

TITLE: CUSTODIAN

 

WORK YEAR: 260 Days (August 1 – July 31)

WORK WEEK: Monday-Friday

WORK DAY: 2pm-10pm

 

REPORTS TO: MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR AND/OR SUPERINTENDENT

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform duties pertaining to the general maintenance, operation and care of the buildings, grounds and equipment of the school district.
  • Monitor and care for property and/or equipment that needs constant attention to prevent undue wear and tear; depreciation and expensive repairs.
  • Upon observing, the custodian will remove, report, repair or otherwise rectify any hazards or dangerous conditions that might result in accidents or fire
  • Maintain a standard of cleanliness that will encourage habits of cleanliness on the part of others including but not necessarily limited to the following:
    • Clean restrooms, water fountains, gym and bleachers
    • Clean and remove all papers and trash from school grounds
    • Clean, dust and sweep halls and classrooms
    • Remove all cans and outdated unusable chemicals
    • Empty waste baskets
    • Clean windows, dust pictures and lockers
    • Clean and maintain locker rooms, weight rooms and bus garage
    • Painting where and when needed
  • Assist in maintaining the security of the building, lock all doors and close all windows in the evening after any and all special events.
  • Assist in maintaining and providing comfortable conditions to school personnel and students. Including but not necessarily limited to radiators and convectors (when needed); repair furniture; strip, wax and buff floors; doors, window frames; clean and refinish gym floor; clean light fixtures and replace faulty bulbs.
  • Maintain the school grounds, building and equipment, including but not necessarily limited to picking up trash and paper from school grounds and make minor repairs where necessary.
  • Maintain and inspect all building Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
  • Perform fire extinguisher and eye wash/shower station inspections monthly
  • Effectuate economies in operation by preventing the needless waste or careless use of supplies, equipment, water, electricity and fuel, by learning what supplies and equipment to use to the best advantage for the varied types of work, the proper quantities to use and the best methods to employ.
  • Budget for and order cleaning and restroom supplies as needed
  • Gather and process purchase orders for supplies
  • Assist in the set up for and cleaning during and after school-related evening events. These include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Athletic contests
    • Music concerts
    • Drama performances
    • Awards ceremonies or banquets
  • Reset the cafeteria after evening events listed above.
