Job Summary:
A Metal Fabricator is a skilled tradesperson who specializes in creating and assembling metal structures, components, and products. They work with various types of metals, such as steel, aluminum, and stainless steel, to fabricate parts used in a wide range of industries. Metal Fabricators use a variety of tools and techniques to cut, shape, bend, and join metal materials to create finished products according to specifications and drawings.
Responsibilities:
Interpretation of Blueprints and Specifications:
Study and understand engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine the dimensions, shapes, and tolerances required for the project.
Metal Cutting and Shaping:
Use cutting tools such as saws, lasers, plasma cutters, and shears to cut metal sheets or bars to the required sizes and shapes. Operate press brakes, rollers, and other machinery to shape metal components, creating bends, curves, and angles as needed.
Welding and Joining:
Utilize welding techniques (MIG, TIG, arc welding) to join metal pieces together, ensuring strong and precise welds.
Employ fastening methods such as riveting, bolting, and soldering to assemble parts.
Precision Measurement:
Use precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify dimensions and ensure accuracy during fabrication.
Assembly and Finishing:
Assemble fabricated parts into complete products, which might include structures, machinery, or specialized components.
Finish surfaces by grinding, polishing, and deburring to achieve smooth and aesthetically pleasing appearances.
Quality Control:
Inspect finished products for defects, ensuring they meet quality standards and specifications.
Make necessary adjustments or repairs to correct any imperfections or deviations.
Safety and Maintenance:
Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines when operating machinery.
Perform regular maintenance on tools and equipment to ensure proper functionality.
Collaboration and Communication:
Collaborate with engineers, designers, and other team members to discuss project requirements and provide input on feasibility and potential improvements. Communicate any challenges or concerns related to fabrication processes, materials, or designs.
Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on each project.
Continuous Learning:
Stay updated on new fabrication techniques, materials, and equipment to improve skills and stay current in the field.
Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent (technical or vocational training preferred).
Proven experience as a Metal Fabricator or similar role.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.
Skilled in using various metalworking tools, including cutting, shaping, and welding equipment.
Knowledge of different metal types and their properties.
Strong mathematical skills and precision measurement abilities.
Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
Physical stamina and the ability to lift heavy materials and operate machinery.
Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
Understanding of safety protocols and the ability to follow them diligently.
Welding certifications (such as AWS certification) may be required, depending on the specific role and industry.
